The difference between d-d transition and charge transfer (CT) transition are as follows
- In the d-d transition, the transition occurs between the d orbitals of the metal. Charge transfer transition occurs between the orbital that is mainly ligand in character and the orbital that is mainly metal in character.
- d-d transitions are Laporte forbidden but spin allowed, i.e., ΔL = 0, ±2, ….. and ΔS = 0. Charge transfer transitions are Laporte and Spin allowed, i.e., ΔL = ±1 and ΔS = 0.
- d-d transitions give rise to less intense (weak) absorptions. Charge transfer transitions give rise to more intense (strong) absorptions.
- Absorptivities for d-d transitions are in the range of 10-1000 L mol-1 cm-1 (or M-1 cm-1). Absorptivities for charge transfer transitions are in the range of 1000-50000 L mol-1 cm-1 (or M-1 cm-1).
